Lamp Lighters
I camped for the week with the Lamp Lighters.
The LL's are one of the core camps at Burning Man, with a vital duty:
every day at sunset they go out into Black Rock City and hang lanterns from tall posts, making it possible for
drunken burnt-out Burners to stagger home at 4AM without killing themselves in the dark. The Lamp Lighters are
among the more solemn and responsible camps at BM, because they really have to get those lanterns up no matter what;
I found that I really liked being a part of their group, because these were people who were there to have fun-everybody's
there to have fun-but they were going to be mature and responsible adults beforehand. Plus,
they were honestly good people; laid-back, amiable, fun, and we traded some good jokes. (The
one about the bear was particularly well-received.)
