I'm off across the country! (Again.)

This page is just for the amusement of my friends. Think of it as a poor man's blog. Actually more like a lazy man's blog, since the picture will update on its own and I won't even have to click a button. Anyhow, say hi. :)

The image above is updated once an hour on the hour, wireless connectivity permitting, over a dial-up link through my cell phone. It shows a 'live' webcam capture of the view from my passenger's seat.

Random thoughts as I drive:

And if you really overshoot, you could end up here in Maine!

I'm home!

What I learned this trip:
- Nebraska is big. Nevada is also big. They compete annually for 'most boring' awards.
- GPRS coverage can't keep up with an Audi TT. Get going fast enough and the phone just can't maintain a connection. Stop for a bit and you're okay tho.
- Cell service between Chicago and Cleveland is appaulingly lame.
- Northern lights are pretty. - New Jersey. What is their problem with left turn lanes? Come ON, people.
- There's a really zen state you hit after a few days of just driving steadily. Once your brain stops asking "are we there yet?" and settles back to just enjoy the ride, it's amazingly relaxing. Then again, that might be the heated seats. (grin)
- Thanks for dropping by, everybody!

Okay, Jersey can be pretty too.

Day five: Home stretch!

I'm somewhere in western (I think) Pennsylvania now. There hasn't been decent cell service since... well, since Utah, really. So the whole "live TripCam" concept has pretty much been a bust. Ah well! On the upshot, I'm almost back to NYC and CT.

Pennsylvania in the fall is really, really beautiful. The trees are all changing and the rolling hills in the morning light are gorgeous. Mind you, that might be because it's morning light, period, and I tend to avoid morning light like the plague. This might be worth investigating. ...nah.

Yeah, Carmen--I saw a bit about the solar storms on the news last night. Saw the northern lights again last night too, even brighter than before--white sheets and red light. Very cool.

Hello, lurkers. :)

Hi Alex, Hi all! Just a quick note to say hi. Miss you all! Many greetings from Germany and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

The Northern Lights you saw this far South was probably due to some major solar storms that's hitting earth lately.

There you go, Eric. It's not small! (I'd apologise, but come on--I wrote this in a truck stop.)

Sorry there've been no updates for a day and a half! There's no GPRS service anywhere in Nebraska or Iowa. Illinois proved intransigent too.

Anyhow, I'm past Chicago now. The auto-post from the camera may not be working but the camera itself has been snapping away, so I've got lots of boring near-identical pictures piling up. I spent the night next to the Mississippi, which was big as ever; got a *lot* of driving done yesterday, almost 800 miles!

The highlight of the trip yesterday was definitely the Northern Lights. On the road between Omaha and Davenport, the sky north of my was lit up with glowing white mist that seemed to hang in the air beyond the road. It was vague at times, clearer at others, but definitely beautiful; I'd never seen the northern lights before. Hadn't realised they'd show this far south, either. (And there were these two kids, with a subtle spoon. They looked confused.)

Lastly, I'd like to thank all the members of the Illinois Law Enforcement Agency who've chosen to join us in the Palace Hotel Ballroom this evening!

Deeth Starr? I bet they named it after the Lucas creation. By the way, my brother-in-law honeymooned in Tatooine. It's a city in the African desert, where the filmed some of it.

Heading out from Laramie now. Aiming for Des Moines tonight if at all possible. No fear of insufficient music--I've got stuff here I didn't know I had! Evita meets Village People...

Zzzzz.... I've made it to Laramie, Wyoming, and here I pause for the night. Wyoming has been entirely in the dark so far--the sun set in Utah. I've passed some amazing rock outcroppings though.

I don't believe it. Truck stops (The 'FlyingJ' line at least) have WiFi service now.

Had a bit of technical trouble--the velcro holding the camera died--so you all missed a truly amazing canyon east of Salt Lake City and get this WalMart parking lot instead.

Incidentally, I took this one ealier today. Somewhere in Nevada, George Lucas has a lot to answer for.

I'm in Salt Lake City%21 It's pretty nifty--the Temple is *very* nice. And young mormons in love are so cute%21. And their meter maids are *cough* really really efficient. [Sorry-minor bug in the log software]

The great thing about McDonald's is that you can wander in, use their bathroom and wander out again and they never even blink.

On the other hand, can anybody explain the large sign proclaiming that 'The BEAN girl is back!' atop Cattlemen's west of Davis? I mean, the mind boggles...
